[TamilNet, Monday, 13 October 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Liberation Tigers launched an attack on a Sri Lankan army position in Mannar today.

Four SLA soldiers were killed and fourteen wounded in the LTTE strike. The attack took place near Semmann Kulam in the Mannar mainland about forty kilometers northwest of Vavuniya.

All traffic on the Mannar - Vavuniya road came to a standstill yesterday following the LTTE assault on the Murunkan Police station yesterday.

Heavy artillery fire from the Sri Lankan army's large base at Thallaady (located on the strategic entry point to the Mannar island) in the direction of Murunkan and the LTTE controlled areas above it was reported yesterday.
