NP governor announces lift of SLA restrictions in Jaffna

Former Northern Province (NP) Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Commander and present governor of NP, G. A. Chandrasiri, who had been the author of several SLA restrictions in Jaffna peninsula during his tenure in Jaffna, announced Thursday that he would take steps to lift several SLA restrictions that have been imposed in Jaffna peninsula for the last thirteen years, sources in Jaffna said. The governor who met the key officers of SLA, Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and police in Jaffna Public Library Wednesday, visited Vadamaraadchi and Thenmaraadchi Thursday accompanied by Minister Douglas Devananda, the sources added.

In Thenmaraadchi G. A. Chandrasiri opened Chaavakachcheari Town Council playground and the Saiva crematorium located on Kearatheevu-Changkuppiddi road for public use.

The governor said that he was making the following concessions to the people in Jaffna peninsula:

    Residents in areas occupied by the SLA as High Security Zone (HSZ) in Ma'ravanpulavu, Kaithadi, Naavatkuzhi and Thanangki’lappu will be permitted to engage in farming and fishing.

  • The playground on Kachchai jetty road will be opened for public use and the roads in front of the police station and Usan-Ketpali road will also be allowed for public use.

  • The roads blocked by SLA in Va’ra’ni on Point Pedro-Kodikaamam road and Va’ra’ni junction are to be permitted for public use.

  • The SLA check posts in Kodikaamam bus stop and on Chaavakachcheari-Charasaalay road will be removed.

  • Action will taken to open the schools in Usan and to release the lands occupied by SLA in Usan area.
