SLA ordered to de-mine Mahajana College

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 13 October 1999, 14:03 GMT]
The Magistrate of Mallakam, P. Vignarajah, yesterday ordered the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to de-mine the premises of Mahajana College in Thellipalai in Jaffna within two weeks. The court ruling comes after a schoolboy was injured in a mine blast recently. The boy's foot was amputated.

The boy's father had filed an application in the courts seeking de-mining of the school premises. The court has informed the Divisional Secretary and de-mining team about the ruling.

The Mahajana College in Tellipalai has been functioning at various locations since 1990, due to the war.

The school began functioning at its own buildings in Thellipalai last month after nine years. The school is in the SLA's security zone.
