A fifteen-year-old boy, Suntharampillai Nallaraja, died on the spot and four other children were seriously wounded when a bomb-like object, which the children played with after they found it floating in the sea, exploded Wednesday morning at Oori, a village in the Karainagar area of the Jaffna district, police said.

Rajitha (15), Mathusha (9) and Mathushan (6), children of Mr. Parameswaran and Ambihapalan Gajendran (12) were injured in the explosion.

Later, they were all admitted to the Jaffna teaching hospital. The injured are now reported to be out of danger, according to medical sources.

In recent months, several incidents of explosion of unexploded ordnances buried in civilian homes and other places have been reported, with two such incidents in the Northern province during the last week alone.
